Personagens - Characters

Yes, this is the surprise I talked about. For the first time one of my scenes will have figures/characters! :)

Only one of them was not made by me. It's the saleswoman, a doll I bought some time ago, made by my namesake Evelyne Doria. In my "story" her name is Lucília. Her family comes from the early Portuguese immigrants, but they are not rich at all. Her father was a well-known and respected tailor, but he died while she was still a young girl, of pneumonia - called "7-day-illness" back then, because if one survived the first 7 days, there was a good chance to get well... if not... well, he didn't! no penicillin back then!.... Her mother loved him so much she never wanted to remarry again. So she had to work to help at home, and working at a fabrics store was one of the few respectable jobs she could have. She knew enough about fabrics, thanks to her father. You'll see her in the store on the next post... :)

Now I'll introduce you to the next characters in the same order as I made them. I'll not pretend I can teach anyone how to dress or wig a doll. I'm a learner myself! I've only made (i.e.: assembled a porcelain kit, dressed & wigged) 3 dolls before! All I know I learned from these places. I strongly recommend you to visit those websites and even join the list below to learn more from the best!

A primeira personagem é "Maria do Perpétuo Socorro".
The first one is "Maria do Perpétuo Socorro". She hates this name, which would translate into something like "Mary of Perpetual Succor". She married a French immigrant, Monsieur François Griard. He imports/exports merchandises in general, and is prosperous. Now she insists to be called "Madame Marie", in French. She tries to keep up with the latest fashions from France, "la capitale de la mode" (the fashion capital). She is a regular customer at "Notre Dame de Paris". It's not the largest or fanciest store in the city, but it's close to her home and she likes the service there. Also, they always have the most recent fashion magazines for the customers to check before they make their purchases, and this is very handy.

Mme Marie Girard
The making of "Marie" was "bumpy": When I was retrieving her parts (head, torso, hands & feet), all porcelain, they fell hard on the floor! Some fingers broke and also her head. Aaarghhhh!!! And she was SO beautifully painted!!! Well, I had no choice but to try and sculpt another head for her. Which I did.... :) Then I painted her head, assembled the parts, dressed her and then wigged. Then I made the accessories. I tried to be as faithful to that period fashion as possible. I'm not an expert in fashion, so forgive me if I failed!

Montada.
Assembled. Many prefer to insert the arms after the clothes.

And now she has underwear! Shoes are painted (they came already sculpted in)

Next comes the little Juliette. She's about 4 years old. Usually, like most ascending families, she's looked after by her nanny, a former slave called Noêmia. But her mother is ill and she had to travel for a few days to visit and assist her. So Marie had to bring Juliette along. Marie loves her daughter very much. But taking care of your own children is not a sign of wealth, and she so wants to look sophisticated! Marie's mother name is Julieta, and her daughter was named after her - a French version of the name, of course! :) She's a shy little girl.

Me dava arrepios! Felizmente o resultado final não ficou tão mal!... :)
Making Juliette was not too hard. But that doll came with the head attached to the body by an elastic band. This way her head turns around, full circle. Like the little girl form the movie "The Exorcist". It creeped me out! But the final result is not that bad, thankfully!... :)

Finally, meet Monsieur Jean-Baptiste Martin. He owns the store. He immigrated from France recently, and opened his store about a year ago. He has big dreams of progress, and he knows that good service and the best products are the key to success. He sells the best fabrics and also sewing machines, mannequins, scissors, threads, ribbons, lace... anything a seamstress might need. Women are always interested in fashion, he knows that! He's balding, and tries to cover the top of the head with some hair from the sides, he lets grow longer than the others. No, I'm not making fun of balding men. My own father did that for a long time. Honestly, I don't know who he was fooling with that "trick", other than himself, but I never dared to ask... :) Jean-Baptiste Martin is the name of my great-grandfather, and I can see some resemblance between this doll and my actual grandfather, Calixte Martin. Don't you?

A próxima postagem será a última sobre a loja: a própria loja finalizada! :)
Next post will be the last one about this store: the store itself, finally finished! :)

Obrigada! Thank you!

I'm a member of an online group called MSATMiniDoll, owned by Dana Burton, who is a very talented artist and an extremely nice and generous person! In this group, besides a great share of information and tips, there is also a RAK program (Random Acts of Kindness) that donates boxes with materials (doll kits, fabric, lace, trims, viscose hair, etc) to some members who really wish to create dolls but just can't afford it at the moment. All the material for the RAK boxes (and shipping money) comes from the generous members of the list.

One of the members, Sandy Babcock, has recently passed away. She was still young, full of life and happiness, loved her dogs, her friends and family and, even more passionately, dolls and miniatures. And she truly believed in the list's RAK program. One of her last wishes was for her family to donate several of her doll kits to the program. As soon as Dana got them, she told us and during a special event. On this day, some members who participated were randomly picked to get some of the kits, the remaining ones were either kept to be given as prizes in future events, sold in the group to raise funds for the RAK program or included in the RAK boxes. I was one of the lucky winners of the day! :)

Logo o meu kit chegou.
My kit arrived soon. And there I was, looking at a beautiful pair of slightly bent legs, two delicate forearms, a neck-to-hip torso and a really pretty smiling blank head.

So far, I had only assembled and wigged two dolls. I still have some kits I got as prizes from the list, but I'm usually terrified to even touch them. We can't find those kits in Brazil, so if I mess up, it's not easy or cheap to replace them...

But... this one was special. I just HAD to make a doll that, at least, would try to honor Sandy's legacy and generosity.

So I immediately started working. I carefully picked the fabric I wanted to use on her, and the hair, etc.

But... I wanted to make a very contemporary doll. And make an outfit that would show her full arms. So, before I did anything else, I had to 'complete' the missing part of the arms (from elbow to shoulders). First I tried to use Fimo, but after baking, it became a little translucent and didn't quite match the porcelain. So I decided to try cold porcelain, very common and easy to find here. Well, it's called (cold) porcelain for a reason, as it matched beautifully. It was hard to make the hue match too, as it darkens a little after it dries, but I managed to get it and the doll was in the position I wanted it to be.

Now it was time to bring that face to life by paining it. I used my thinnest brush and acrylic paint. Used make-up blush to give a natural shadow to the recess parts of the face and body. Then I finally worked on the clothes, the necklace and the wig.

E assim nasceu Laura.
And this is how Laura was 'born'. Making the other previous dolls had been a 'painful' process, as I was always afraid to mess things up. But Laura as SO easy! So easy and fast that I just didn't think of taking pictures of the steps as I progressed!... I enjoyed it all so much, even the most complex steps of the way! It was as if the doll itself was 'telling' me at each step what she wanted to be: which clothes to wear, more color here, more porcelain there, less over there... And even better, I was SO happy with the result!...

Later Sandy's sister Lynn told me that Laura is the name of Sandy's best friend, what a wonderful coincidence!!! Hmmm... was it the doll 'telling' me what she wanted to be, guiding me through each step, or could it have been Sandy herself, from up above, guiding and inspiring me to discover with her the wonderful feeling we get when we create a 1:12 doll?

Bem, só sei que curti! :)
E aqui está a Laura:
Well, the only thing I know for sure is that I really enjoyed it! :)
And here is Laura:

A close-up on Laura, 'caught' in the middle of adjusting her hair, so girly!...

I still don't know if I'll give her some high heels of if I'll leave her  feet free...

De outro ângulo.
From another angle.

Ainda vou criar um ambiente digno dela. Esta cadeira é só para  a foto.
I'm still going to make a room just for her. This chair is just to pose for  pictures.

This is not the kit I got, but as I forgot to take a picture of it, this one illustrates how they come (to my Brazilian friends).

E finalmente, aqui está Sandy Babcock, cuja generosidade fez Laura nascer!
And last but far from least, here is Sandy Babcock, whose generosity turned Laura into reality!

Obrigada Sandy, Lynn e Mitzy (irmã e mãe da Sandy) e Dana!!!!
Thank you so much Sandy, Lynn (Sandy's sister), Mitzy (Sandy's mother) and Dana!!!!
