Castine 2015

As you saw from my previous posts, going to IGMA's Guild School in Castine is a worthwhile experience! It's way more than just taking some classes on miniature - as if that was not enough, after all, you're learning from the best... It's a unique experience, shared with people who understand your passion for miniatures, who enjoy them as much as you. There, you meet people who are in sync, in a wonderful place. So, what are you waiting for??? :)

You don't even have to be an IGMA member to go to school there!!!

Next GS will be in 2015, from June 13th to 19th. IGMA is already taking registrations. All you have to do is download the pdf form from the website, fill in with your info and send them. There is a $200 non-refundable deposit, which will be deducted from the total mentioned below. Yes, you can always take your time and think, but all courses are distributed on 'first come, first served' basis, so you run the risk of not getting the classes you like the most...

Valores/Investment:
* starndard tuition is $1375, and this includes 36 hours of instruction, room, and meals
* $850 includes 36 hours of instruction, but you make your own arrangements for off-campus room and meals. I gotta tell you, though: a huge part of the fun is being there full time with other students, sharing the meals, the dorm, so you can exchange ideas, info, experience, etc. I wouldn't miss this for the world!
* $250 for an additional 12 hours of class, a total of 48 hours of instruction
* There is a small fee for those who wish to arrive early (before the first Saturday) or depart late (after last Saturday). Way less than any hotel, I promise!
* you can book the airport shuttle beforehand back & forth to Bangor. Again, way less than any other arrangements you could think of...
* classes also incur in additional material fees, those vary from $10 to $200, depending on the materials used. I paid a total of $190 for the material fees of all 3 classes combined.

Payments can be made by check (from US banks only and in US Dollars), Visa or MasterCard. Material fees are usually paid cash to the teachers at school.

Do you think this is too much 'just for some classes' on miniature? First of all, those are not 'just some classes'! They are CLASSES, all capital letters. You learn amazing techniques, with the best in the world. You improve your work. If you are serious about miniatures, I totally recommend taking them.

Even if you are not interested in miniatures as a career, all you want is to make better miniatures for yourself, consider this: Any other trip you make to the US, how much would you pay for a hotel per night? $80? $100? What about food? How much would you spend per day? $20? $40? What about leisure time, how much would you pay to visit any touristic site? $18? $25? And keep in mind I'm being VERY conservative in those estimates... So, multiply those values by 7 days (one week). How much would you spend? If it's a small unknown place, maybe in the countryside, at least $850. If in a famous place like New York, double that (at least!) and no money considered for shopping on 5th Avenue, ok? :) And how much of your time would you spend, in this hypothetical trip, among people who enjoy miniatures, or making miniatures, or learning from the best? How many exhibits of awesome miniatures, parties and gatherings would you go to? How much of that time would be spend in pure joy and among the best people ever? If you think of everything you'll enjoy and get in return from this week, it's an absolute bargain!

The point is: do you like miniatures? Do you like well-made miniatures? Would you like to indulge yourself with a gift that will fill your whole life with good memories and knowledge acquired? So go to Guild School!!! :)  At least once in your life! (and I SO doubt you won't want to go back there every single year after that, hahaha!!!!)

(data do carimbo no correio).
So, now you are thrilled about going to Castine, but, like me, you can only afford the tuition or the traveling expenses? Well, I saved 4 years to go this time, because international trips are expensive, you know... That's ok! It is possible to apply to IGMA's scholarship program. Choose your best work so far - no kits or other class projects, ok? it has got to be items you made yourself, from scratch - and take up to 10 pictures of them, fill in the school form, ask someone who knows your work to write a recommendation letter for you, saying why you are a good candidate for the scholarship and how you'd benefit from what you learn there. It doesn't have to be a member at IGMA or even a well-known miniaturist. That could help, but not relevant. Make 6 copies of all this material and send to the address in the form, postmarked no later than August 1st.

If you don't get it the first time, persist! I didn't get it on my first application, but I persisted until I got it :) And it was soooo worth it!!!

1) Contribuição do aluno na promoção das miniaturas como uma forma de arte e firmar normas (como adesão a escala e proporções, exatidão histórica, etc) na criação de miniaturas;
2) qualidade do trabalho do aluno e até que ponto os cursos oferecidos pela escola poderão melhorar a habilidade do aluno nas suas áreas de interesse;
3) a disseminação do conhecimento, do entusiasmo e da habilidade para outros miniaturistas no contexto local, além do mundial, ensinando, escrevendo sobre, participando em exibições ou outras formas de compartilhar, tanto no passado quanto no futuro;
Scholarship applicants are evaluated on how their attendance at
the Guild School could potentially contribute to:
1) the furtherance of miniatures as an art form and the raising of standards (including, but not limited to - adherence to scale and proportions, historical accuracy, etc.) in the creation of miniatures;
2) the quality of the applicant's work and the degree to which the curriculum offered by the school would expand or enhance the applicant’s skills and areas of interest;
3) the dissemination of knowledge, enthusiasm, and skills to miniaturists within a local context, as well as around  the world, by teaching, writing, exhibiting or other forms of sharing, both past and in the future;
4) the degree to which the applicant needs financial assistance for school expenses and how important attending the Guild School would be to them (fiscal priorities).

As aulas / The Classes
2015 actual classes will only be known by October/November. That's when people who have already registered or scholarship students will get the descriptive catalog with pictures of the classes. For the time being, here are some class proposals, which may or may not become actual classes. You can see more proposals at Cheryl's album on Flirk: just click on the right arrow to see more pictures, there are many!

Some classes take 48 hours. They are full time classes (6 hours per day), from Sunday to Friday. But that will be the only class you can take. Usually they deal with more complex projects, with several steps, hence the duration.

There are 36 hours classes. They take either a full morning or afternoon, and part of the other period. Also complex. Complex, but not necessarily difficult. Keep in mind that teachers there know what they are doing, they know how to teach well! :)

There are 24 hours classes. Those last a full morning or a full afternoon, from Sunday to Friday. If you pay for the extra 12 hours, you can pick 2 of those 24 hour classes, for example. I picked one 24 and two 12.

Finally, there are the 12 hour classes. You can take 3 of those in the standard tuition (36 hours)

Let me tell you a secret: the hardest part is... picking the classes!!! :) I felt like taking them ALL!!! ;) I'm sorry, not possible... you'll have to go back there again and again to learn every possible technique, and there are always new classes and new techniques being offered... Do you understand now why some wise people keep going back there every year, for the past 25 years??? ;)

As far as I know, one can only be granted one scholarship once in a lifetime. So, just like most students, if I want to go back to Castine, I'll have to save money... And I do want to go there in 2015!!!! :)

PS: before anyone asks me: nope, IGMA has never asked me to post this or any of my previous posts. I did this because I loved it so much that I want to see more people going there. I did it because I loved it so much that I know that other people, who still haven't been there, have no idea of what they're missing. I did it because before going there I thought it was an impossible dream, and now not only I know it's perfectly possible, but absolutely worth it!!!

A Viagem IV, Eventos - The Trip IV, Events

If you thought that Castine is just about some classes on how to make miniatures, you couldn't be more wrong! :) It's WAY more than that! There you enjoy a full immersion week in a perfect world, where everybody understands your passion for miniatures, what miniatures are and they probably understand and enjoy them even more than you... :)

Ahhhh... é bom demais!!!
Every day there are special events & activities, besides gatherings. There are auctions, silent and live. There are exhibits, there are visits to other classes. There are meetings of students with similar interests. Ahhh... it's so good!!!

On the first days, the exhibit room displays pieces by new Artisans and other pieces brought by IGMA members and students. Each one is beautiful and inspiring. Oh, and also on display are the items donated for the live auction, which takes place on Tuesday evening.

A few days later, they display the prototypes for next year classes proposals. Not all of them will actually become classes. The students this year can vote, and the most voted ones will be classes in 2015.

You can see more pictures of proposed classes on Debora Beijerbacht Picasa album. Btw, she was awarded Artisan title this year. A well-deserved reward. I've been following her blog for quite a while now and her work is amazing (see picutres above).

Finally, on Friday, the pieces made by the students during the week are displayed. Even the unfinished ones. After all, everyone there is proud, and rightly so, of what they've learned and achieved during the week! It's so good to see your piece at display there!!!

During the 4 first days, other items like books, tools, supplies, miniatures, etc., donated by students and IGMA members, are at display in the cafeteria. That's the silent auctions. You pick an item you want to bid on, write your name, your bid and the item number on a piece of paper and place it in a box. If your bid is the highest, you win it! I was afraid to bid on a table saw for miniatures - partially because of its weight, partially because I thought it would be too expensive - and it ended being sold by $45... I did make an offer of $30 for a set of "Miniature Cabinet Maker" magazines. I thought I was being cheap, but I was on shoestring there, remember? (scholarship student, lol!). And it ended up being sold for $38. Oh, I wish I had offered a little more! So, if you go there, don't be shy, you may end up taking back home a real treasure in terms of books, tools, supplies and beautiful minis for a very reasonable price!

:) Eu fiz a cama, lembram dela?
Right after dinner on Tuesday (the lobster one), the so much anticipated live auction takes place. It's tradition that scholarship students offer an item they made themselves for the auction. After all, its main purpose is to raise funds to... pay for scholarships!!! :) And I made the bed, remember?

Besides that token of appreciation :) we also work/help at the auction, taking each item from table to table so that bidders can take a closer look at them, even though they are shown later on the big screen. Wow, that's insane! :) The auction is very lively and quick, so we cannot take too long at each table... After ten full 'laps'/different items, my recovering foot couldn't take it anymore, so I had to stop. But that was ok, as there were only 2 items left by then.

Fiquei emocionada!!! E um tantinho sem jeito, rsrs...
Right at the beginning, when we're already making the first 'lap' :), we, the scholarship students are officially 'introduced' by Barbara Davis (Guild School director), who is also opening the auction. When she said my name, the first student from Brazil, ever, wow, there was a big ovation, everybody was clapping hands and cheering! I was so moved!!! And a little bit shy too, hehe...

Itens para o leilão, olha minha cama aí! :)  Items for the auction, hey, my bed is there! :)
When my bed was being auctioned, I stood still and just stared at the big screen, mesmerized, I couldn't believe my eyes. One of the auction organizers kindly reminded me to circulate, but right away the other one noticed what was going on and said: "leave her, it's her item being auctioned now" and both smiled, in complicity. And my heart skipped a beat when it was sold for... $150!!! Wow!!! I was super happy and proud. After all, it was a simple item, and I was surrounded by Artisans & Fellows!

A compradora da minha cama :)   She's the one who bought it :)
The price range the items are sold vary a lot, from $50 paid for a out-of-print book by Annelle Ferguson to $5,000 (wow!) paid for a ooak 17th century wood loom, 100% functional, the piece submitted for Artisan title. Keep in mind that this not just about selling/buying pieces, it's a fund raising event for scholarships, buying and keeping the tools used in the classes, keeping the tuition cost, for students, as low as possible. So, a very noble cause! :)

Feira de miniaturas / Miniature Show

On Thursday evening happens the very much anticipated miniature show, called Munchies, Minis & More. Only instructors can have tables to sell there. Remember: they are all Artisans & Fellows!!! So, no 'bargain finding' there. You can actually find very affordable pieces, some tools or hard-to-find supplies to make miniatures. But the main thing about it are the OOAK (one of a kind) items made by this elite! And that's exactly what the buyers want: uniqueness and perfection. Also, those who can't find what they have been keeping an eye on - probably because someone else 'snatched' it first, :) they can order another one directly to the maker. There is also a generous table with snacks & beverages. It's a great time and place to relax a little with, by this time of the week, your new friends! :)

Outros eventos / Other events

Down there at the 'basement' of Curtis hall, the dorm building, right below the bookstore, there is the students' lounge. Almost every evening it's the venue of informal gatherings, with some snacks & beverages. Each evening it's a different set of hosts from IGMA, each willing to share information and clear out doubts about a topic they are experts at: board of trustees, school instructors, school committee, and there's also a free night just for everyone to enjoy with fun & games!

On Friday, after the closing ceremony, which takes place right there at the cafeteria, after the students projects exhibit, after the certificates are handled, there is a party in the lounge right below the cafeteria, where I had my leather armchair classes. It's a very cool gathering, as by this time, you know almost everyone there, we're all friends. There is a loop-slideshow with candid pictures of everyone, most of them we didn't even notice were being taken! :) But for me that was a bitter-sweet party, as it also meant that this wonderful week was over, and I didn't want that to happen at all! I did not want to wait another year to have all that fun and learn all that much again!! Nooooo! Stop that train, I want to stay at that station!!! :)

So... see that it's way more than just some "classes" about miniatures? It's heavens!!! Do you want to go too? On my next post I'll tell you how... ;)

A Viagem III, Aulas - The Trip III, Classes

Ahhh, it's finally time for the most important topic when it comes to IGMA's Guild School, in Castine: the classes!!!

As I said before, the 'standard' tuition entitles you to 36 hours of class during the week. I paid extra for another 12 hours, then I had classes full-time. You can choose the classes among the offered ones, and they are divided into 12, 24 36 and 48 hours of duration. So if, like me, you choose to have 48 hours total, you can pick any combination among: 4 x 12h classes, 2 x 12h + 1 x 24h, 1 x 12h + 1 x 36h or only 1 x 48 hour class.

But there's a catch: you have to come up with 3 sets of class options, as students are distributed among the classes by drawing. If, when your time comes in the drawing, the classes you picked in your first option are already full, you'll be directed to your second set of options, and so on. The 'older' students - some people have been going there for 25 years, every year!!! Lucky them... :) - are drawn first, then the other ones follow. This year most students got their first option (of class sets). So did I, yay!!! :) But I must admit I would have been equally thrilled with any set of options I made, as I wished I could take ALL of the classes offered!!! ;)

Ok, let's talk about the classes I took, then... I didn't take many pictures of the process of creation because my camera battery died on me (remember?) and I only managed to get a plug adapter 3 days later. And the cell phone camera sucks!!

There is a material fee for each class, as the instructors provide us with everything we need: supplies & tools. All you need to take is some basic items like craft knife, scissors, pencil, ruler, magnifying lenses, etc.

1) FIRST class: in the morning, every day from 7:45 to 9:45. Leathered armchair with Nancy Summers.

This is the prototype and mine, before I started (we get the structure as you see).

Further ahead, the most complicated part is almost over: pre-drilling the holes and finding them through the leather to place the tiny little pins.

The finished armchair, at the final exhibit: I'm a proud mommy!!! :)

2) SECOND class: in the morning, every day, from 10 to 12. Potted anthurium. With Hiroyuki Kimura & Kyoko Mikai, from Japan.

They are serious in their art and devoted teachers, but still their classes are light and fun, they are awesome! The technique uses a special kind of air-dry clay, imported from Japan, which has some kind of resin in it. This allows the clay to be rolled very thin and manipulated without breaking, and stays flexible after dry (without shrinking, unlike cold porcelain). Making this plant isn't easy, it's very complicated, but they managed to break the process down into easier steps, and are always there for you to guide and help you how to fix the mistakes. Even though they seemed to struggle a little bit with English, they managed to communicate well. Not to mention they speak English way better then I'll ever, ever speak any Japanese, lol...

It was a very relaxed class, even though the technique wasn't easy.
It was the first of my pieces to go into the exhibit room, where all pieces by all students are at display on the last day, and I took it myself. I felt odd when I left my little plant there, all alone... I felt like a mother 'abandoning' her child all alone on the first day at school, lol... But to my surprise, when I got back there in the evening, it was right next to the teachers prototype, I felt so honored!!!

3) THIRD class: everyday after lunch (only one hour for lunch. Believe me, it's barely enough!) :) from 1 to 5:15 pm. Four carver chairs, those are rustic chairs from the 17th century. With Pete & Pam Boorum

This couple is the best! They know what they are talking about like nobody else, and they have a wonderful teaching technique. They are also fun and patient with beginners, like me. I had never used a lathe in my life, nor a drill press or a table saw for miniatures. At first I was a little scared, but they have a way to make you feel safe using them, by teaching you the right and safe way to work with all of those machines!

Unfortunately I didn't have the money or the room in my luggage to bring these wonderful machines with me, because they sell them too. By the way, they are all in my 'to buy' list... :)

AMEI!!!
To make the chairs, we cut and turn each part, stain both the wood and the thread used on the seats. Then we glue them together and weave the seats. LOVED IT!!!!

Well, I was lucky enough to finish all my projects for all 3 classes by Friday, but not everybody manages to do that. There are people who work more slowly, and that's ok, as each one has their own working pace. There are projects in other classes that are more complicated, and in the classes catalog they even tell you if completion is likely or not. That's ok too, as we go there to learn new techniques or perfect them, so you can always finish them back home. But when Thursday comes, we can see the air of despair "I'm not going to finish it!" on some faces, and many stay after hours in their classes trying to finish their projects, :) ...

On the other hand, the seminars I took aren't necessarily meant to finish a project. From the three ones I took, only one had a full project to make & finish. The other ones were more about presenting a technique. Still, they are really worth it!

We can pick the seminars we wish to attend, but as they usually have a set number of students, we not always end up getting the first option. It's a 'first come, first served' basis, and some people can pick their options really fast! :) Some are free and other ones have a small material fee.

Os seminários que fiz foram:
These are the seminars I took:

On the first Saturday, from 10 to 11:30: With Suzanne Herget: tatting. I have always loved this beautiful kind of lace, I think it looks perfect in miniature. But it always seemed too hard for me. I had bought a book, I watched how-to videos on Youtube, but just couldn't get how to make it. She really got me through it and I finally learned the basic stitches! Now all I have to do is train a lot and then start using thinner threads and smaller needles to make then in miniature... :)

Sunday evening, after dinner, from 7:45 to 8:45: Plants in miniature, with Miyuki Kobayashi. She used the same clay we used for the anthurium, but she showed us how to make very tiny leaves, to use them in scenes or aquariums. It's amazing how realistic they look! Well, if they are made in the right size, right? :) I'll have to make them way smaller, because all of mine turned out too big.

In this picture her prototypes are stuck in a kitchen/shower sponge! So you can imagine how small they are. I had to take a picture in macro setting to be able to see them well!

Monday evening after dinner, from 7:45 to 8:45: Christmas tree in 1:144, with Nell Corkin. This was the only seminar, among the ones I attended, with a project to finish. And not only I did finish mine, but I fell in love with it, so cute!!! It's amazing the wonderful things Nell can create in such a small scale, and so perfectly!

Of course I cannot teach here the same projects I learned there. It wouldn't be ethical and it would be an infringement of copyrights! I can, though, incorporate the techniques I've learned there and develop my own projects, of course. Those, self-developed projects, can be sold and taught by any student.

So, did you like them? So, stay tuned because soon I'll explain how to register to Guild School 2015 or even how to apply for a scholarship, as I did ;)

Check IGMA's website to see more videos with images of some of 2013 classes. It's dream material, isn't it? :)
